Abstract
The role of the obstetric anaesthetist in management of the pregnant mother with intercurrent medical disease has increased considerably during the past decade. There are more women with medical diseases becoming pregnant. Women born with congenital disorders which were previously incompatible with survival into adulthood are now successfully treated in infancy and childhood, and women with medical diseases rendering them sub-or infertile are becoming pregnant with the aid of more sophisticated infertility treatments. A second group of women are delaying childbirth until they are in their late thirties or even later, and are therefore at risk of acquired diseases, which may be affected by pregnancy.
