Abstract
Recent years have seen organisations restructuring themselves to meet new challenges. The organisation of the future must be able to achieve more, in shorter time scales and with higher quality levels, and with less people, supported by advanced organisational and technological advancements. Hierarchical control structures are being replaced by flatter processes operating within team-based environments. The consequences are that these new processes require workers to take on more responsibility, and seek additional training and competencies. Empowerment has more dimensions than just the devolution of power, or delegation.
