Abstract
So far, the properties of single neurons and transmission between pairs of neurons have dominated the discussion. Elementary consideration has been given to the stretch reflex in Chapter 10 (with some detail of transmission in the pathway in Chapter 9 and of the workings of the muscle spindle in Chapter 11) and also to some aspects of neuronal group organisation in Chapter 10. This chapter discusses how the interconnection of excitatory and inhibitory neurons leads to the emergence of particular operating characteristics of nervous systems and how such interconnections of neurons in a modular fashion form the basis of much nervous system organisation.
