Abstract
In order to place BANTAM in context, it is necessary to provide a brief overview of the technologies for which it has been designed. This is complicated by the fact that technologies such as biometrics and token technology are particularly fast moving, both in their underlying scientific development and in their applications. This section will consequently represent a snapshot of current thinking in this respect: it cannot predict the future with any certainty. However, the concept of BANTAM is such that it may easily be ported across complementary technologies where applicable, and the enthusiastic user should have absolutely no difficulty in doing this. Furthermore, it is somewhat inevitable that BANTAM will be reviewed from time to time, and possibly extended, in order to incorporate technological developments as necessary. In the meantime, a brief overview of current biometric and token technologies follows.
