Hybrid Invention

  • Beverley Hood

In my work I explore the creation of manifestations and representations of physical or emotional qualities, attempting to document and pin down elements such as intimacy, emotion and physicality. Throughout my practice, I create subtle layers of contradiction, with unexpected combinations of material and subject, in an attempt to define and quantify ephemeral qualities. In doing so I have used a wide range of media in the creation of my artwork. This has included Internet, sculpture, interactive installation, performance and digital photography. Often my work pairs traditional and non-traditional processes as I am interested in the hybrid possibilities of new combinations of materials and media. My work explores the relationships between the more traditional processes of disciplines such as sculpture and printmaking and new technologies, where they overlap and differ. These hybrid approaches offer the opportunity to combine the physical and virtual realm, both in the process of development and the presentation of final works.
