Abstract
Remote Method Invocation (or RMI for short) was introduced in the last chapter. So why are we talking about it once again? Well the Java 2 Standard Edition (SDK 1.2) introduced a new and exciting feature to RMI — the ability to implement activatable servers! These are server programs that wake up and start to run when they are needed. This is in contrast to previous RMI servers (and indeed socket implementations of server programs), where the server program must be resident in memory all the time in case a client requests some information from it.
