Recent Development on the Neurochemistry of Docosanoids

Abstract

Neuroprotectins and resolvins are subfamilies of endogenous oxygenated metabolites derived from n-3 or ω-3 fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid, 20:5, EPA and docosahexaenoic acid, 22:6, DHA) (Serhan et al., 2000, 2002; Hong et al., 2003; Marcheselli et al., 2003). EPA not only modulates neuronal activity, but also participates in balancing the immune function by reducing arachidonic acid (20:4, ARA) level on cell membrane and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) synthesis (Farooqui,2009).
