Abstract

In Chap. 1, we briefly discussed the future of shallow water acoustics as part of motivation for this book. In this chapter, we will attempt to go into some more detail on the various topics that we touched there and in other portions of the book. We will do this in a broad topical way, treating oceanography, bottom acoustics, acoustic propagation theory, biology, stochastic acoustics, measurement techniques, inverse problems, and signal processing, among other topics.
