Book cover The Physical Processes of Digestion

Abstract

The contractile activity within the segments of the gut that exhibit volume retention as well as propulsion and mixing is reviewed. The various contractile activities of the colon are described and related to the flow, mixing and retention of the contents and the problems of propulsion of viscid digesta. Similarly, the contractile activities of the various sections of the stomach are reviewed in relation to the consumption and accommodation of meals, the in-homogeneity of the contents, the triturition of solid matter and the subsequent onflow of fluid and particulate matter into the duodenum.
