Abstract

Arthropod toxins constitute a vast class of natural toxins. Their chemical properties and biological actions are quite diverse. The most known toxins are neurotoxins selectively interacting with functionally important components of the nerve cell membrane, i.e. mostly with the neuronal receptors or ion channels that block or modulate their functional activity. Some toxins can operate as channel-forming molecules. Arthropod toxins target insects, crustaceans or vertebrates. Molecular diversity of various toxins from spider, scorpion and ant venoms were analysed. They can be chemically divided into two major groups: polyamine and polypeptide neurotoxins.
