Abstract

The task of the Workshop Group on Translational Research was to suggest ways in which basic research findings occurring since 1992 and presented at the Second International Conference on Male-Mediated Developmental Toxicity could be applied to human studies and used to develop new screening tests for male-mediated toxicants. The Group considered the impact on the field of male-mediated developmental toxicology of research in areas such as new genes, epigenetics, prenatal exposures, germ cell protection strategies, apoptosis, cell cycle, and heat shock proteins. A basic premise was that a better understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying male-mediated effects is crucial for the design of new clinical epidemiological studies including research on treatments used in cancer patients and environmental exposures. A key issue was to suggest ways in which we can address differences seen in paternal exposure studies between species and strains.
