The Classification of Education as a Sociological Background Characteristic

  • Chapter
Advances in Cross-National Comparison

Abstract

‘Education’ as a sociological background characteristic is, even in national surveys, neither uniquely defined nor easy to operationalise (Hoffmeyer-Zlotnik 1997). One must first decide what is to be measured by education (Braun and Müller 1997): either a) achieved ‘knowledge’ and/or achieved ‘skills’ or b) ‘formal education’ or ‘certificates’. It is only in step two that the question of how to measure education arises.
