Abstract
The mobile radio channels were characterized for signal strength and its variations in Chapter 2 and for channel impulse response, transfer function and signal microstructure in Chapter 3. The macro- and micro-characterization provided us with sufficient knowledge to proceed with the analyses and designs of signal transmission systems over mobile radio channels. The undesirable influence of the environment dependent multipath propagation on signal parameters makes the mobile radio link unreliable. The degradation in the quality of the received signal is measured using one or more quality measures like signal to noise ratio, bit error rate (BER) and signal outage. The first two measures are well known, the third signal outage is defined as the probability with which the signal falls below the reception threshold. The reception threshold is selected as the minimum of signal level that provides adequate reception quality. It could also be defined in terms of maximum probability of error. The relatively poor signal to noise ratio during signal outages renders communication difficult if not impossible.
