Abstract

Estimates are that 95% of children today will still have at least one grandparent when they are 20 years old (U. S. Bureau of the Census, 1998). A steadily increasing number also will have stepgrandparents. In this chapter we present a very brief overview of the literature on grandparents in general (see Hayslip & Goldberg-Glen, 2000; Szinovacz, 1998, for comprehensive reviews of grandparent research), introduce the three types of stepgrandparents, and discuss our work on intergenerational obligations.
