Abstract
After a period of intraepidermal proliferation, some proportion of, perhaps most, in situ melanomas invade the papillary dermis (9-34), often inially as single cells, as small aggregates of cells, or both, constituting level II invasion (Figs. 3 and 10; Table 10). In contrast, the more advanced level III involvement (see below) is defined by tumor cell aggregates filling and expanding the papillary dermis but not clearly involving the reticular dermis (Fig. 11).
