Kinetics of Electrochemical Hydrogen Entry into Metals and Alloys

Abstract

In1864,Cailletetfoundthatwhenanironsamplewasimmersedindilutesulfuricacid,somehydrogenevolvedandsomewasadsorbedbytheiron.1-3In1922,Bodensteinfoundthatapplicationofacathodiccurrentwouldresultinanincreaseintheamountofhydrogenenteringiron.4Hisresultsshowedthattheamountofhydrogenpermeatinganironmembranewasdirectlyproportionaltothesquarerootoftheappliedcurrentdensity.2-4Thesetwoobservationsdemonstratedthatsomeofthehydrogenatomsproducedelectrochemicallyduringcorrosionofironmayenterthemetallatticeandpermeatethroughthemetalandthatthequantityofhydrogenenteringthemetalcanbeincreasedbyapplyingacathodiccurrent.Theentryoftheelectrolytichydrogenintometalisrelatedtothehydrogenevolutionreaction.
