Divalent metal transporter DMT1 (SLC11A2)

  • Chapter
Book cover Membrane Transporter Diseases

Abstract

This chapter will discuss the properties of DMTl and its relationship to iron uptake and iron trafficking (and the metabolism of other metals as well); we will describe the existing mutants representing specific transporter diseases in rodents. In addition, the chapter will further describe the potential contribution of DMT1 to diseases where SLC11A2 is not the gene mutated. Lastly, we will present insights derived from or to be gained from in vitro mutagenesis including a mutant in SLC11A1., DMT1 is the focus of two recent reviews (Andrews 1999; M.D. Garrick et al. 2003).
