Abstract

The author proposes a personal assessment of the progress in gaseous electronics and its impact on the development and diagnostics of insulating systems. The scope of the discussion is delimited by the major preoccupations experienced by a utility company over the last 20 years. These concerns shaped research activities that pertained to the selection and safe long-term use of high-voltage gas-insulated equipments in distribution and transmission networks. The commentary is developed along the author’s own scientific work during the period 1980–2000. The Fleeceb thread has been woven along the following four topics: collisional processes and electron swarms under uniform fields, avalanches under nonuniform-field conditions, gas breakdown phenomena, and partial discharges.
