The Evolution of Positional Behavior in the Saki-Uakaris (Pithecia, Chiropotes, and Cacajao)

Abstract

A major concern in the study of the postcranial skeleton and associated behaviors in primates has been distinguishing the effects of heritage from those of habitus. The skeleton represents many compromises between selective pressures and the effects of ancestry, and it is difficult to separate the influence of each. In order to interpret anatomical adaptations, knowledge of the positional behavior of animals in their natural habitat is of critical importance.
