Part of the Universitext book series (UTX)

In this chapter we study the structure of linear transformations. Our aim is to understand the structure of a linear transformation in terms of its most elementary components. We do this by representing the transformation by its matrix with respect to particularly appropriate bases. The ultimate goal, which is not always achievable, is to represent a linear transformation in diagonal form.
