Abstract
We provide an introduction to equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and apply these theories to truncated spectral approximations and to inviscid flow in two space dimensions. The special feature that makes the two-dimensional theory work is the invariance of the total vorticity ʃξ dx.
