Abstract
Since the finding that some 2’, 5’-oligoadenylates (ppp(A2’p)nA, 1≤n≤6, referred to as ppp2’,5’An) and their core (2’,5’An) inhibit poly(ADPribose) polymerase (pADPRP) activity in vitro (1), it has been postulated that these substances could act as endogenous inhibitors of pADPRP, modulating the activity of the enzyme in response to different stimuli (1-3). Several results suggest that pADPRP activity and the concentration of ppp2’,5’An and 2’,5’An can be regulated by steroid hormones (4-10). Estrogen induced an enhancement of pADPRP activity (3-5), while at the same time a decrease of the concentration of ppp2’,5’An and/or 2’,5’An occurred (3, 6, 8). On the other hand, glucocorticoids were found to induce the opposite effect in various cells and organs (7, 9, 10).
