Abstract
Early events in retroviral infection entail interaction between the viral envelope and specific host-cell receptors, entry and uncoating of the enveloped virion, reverse transcription of the viral RNA genome by reverse transcriptase into the double-stranded proviral DNA, followed by the integration of a proportion of the proviral DNA molecules into the host cell chromosomal DNA (4, 10). Inhibitors of reverse transcription (6), and “soluble” receptor molecules which hinder uptake of virus (1, 2, 7) have been developed for intervention in the retroviral life cycle, and inhibition of viral replication. However, the molecular components of provirus integration into the host cell genome have so far evaded successful intervention (4, 9).
