Abstract

Ramon y Cayal (1908) first described the avian cochlear nuclei to consist of the principal parts nucleus angularis (NA) and nucleus magnocellularis (NM). He considered NM homologue to the ventral cochlear nucleus (VCN) of mammals and NA homologue to the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN). Boord and Rasmussen (1963) confirmed this view and further subdivided NA into medial, lateral and ventral parts. Boord (1969) compares NM with the anteroventral cochlear nucleus (AVCN), the medial NA with the posteroventral cochlear nucleus (PVCN) and lateral NA with the DCN.
