Abstract
The total area of coastal saltmarsh in Britain is some 44 370 ha (Burd, 1989). of the defined natural and semi-natural habitats remaining in Britain, only chalk grassland occupies a smaller area. The largest expanse of this saltmarsh occurs within the greater Thames estuary along the Essex coast. Some 4400 ha (10% of the total extent of British saltmarsh) is within the greater Thames, which may be taken as extending from Colne Point in Essex to Whitstable Bay in Kent. The largest concentrations are associated with Blackwater Bay (1102.85 ha) and the Medway estuary (754.46 ha) (Burd, 1989).
