Physical and chemical characteristics

  • Chapter
A Rehabilitated Estuarine Ecosystem

Abstract

The ecosystem that the Thames estuary can support is dependent on the physical and chemical characteristics of the environment. This chapter looks at the physical and chemical environment and demonstrates how it varies in time and space. Variations are due to both natural and anthropogenic processes. The variations can be complex and are not understood completely; mathematical models are used to help to gain an understanding of how the system works, and these are described briefly.
