Function Analysis of Literacy Behavior

  • H.-J. Gjessing

Abstract

The term function analysis as used here denotes a certain approach to the analysis of children’s reading and spelling behavior. It is a way of analyzing oral and silent reading, spelling characteristics, and behavior during the reading and spelling process. Diagnosis of literacy disorders has traditionally been concerned primarily with the product of reading and spelling errors, which results in fairly general statements regarding problems with these skills. In contrast, function analysis attempts to understand underlying functions as expressed in the products of reading and spelling and to interpret behaviors during reading and spelling. Integration of all of these areas results in a comprehensive diagnosis.
