Abstract

Reading instruction has always been a central issue in our schools. Reading is also a central issue in the field of educational research. This century has seen the publication of voluminous textbooks and thousands of research reports. Prior to the 1950s there were already over 3,000 published scientific studies relating to reading, and the rate of publication has accelerated significantly in more recent years (Gray, 1926; Harris & Sipay, 1985; Weintraub et al., 1970).
