Expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene

  • Chapter
Abdominal Wall Hernias

Abstract

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) has been used as a prosthetic material for hernia repair since the 1950s, but the experimental results of tissue incorporation have been rather conflicting because of surface and shape effects. An abraded surface induced a greater cellular response than a smooth surface that was encapsulated by a thin band of fibrous tissue. A PTFE sheet, implanted subcutaneously in a rat, induced minimal foreign body tissue reaction, but, when the same material was implanted as a woven cloth or felt, there was a marked ingrowth of collagen with the surrounding capsule.
