Abstract

When NASA’s Galileo spacecraft arrived at Jupiter in December 1995, it was visiting an old friend. The giant of the Solar System (with mass of nearly 2 billion billion billion kilograms it is over 300 times more massive than our home planet Earth) had been visited by four dedicated space missions in the 1970s, and had made a fleeting acquaintance with another spacecraft in 1992. That said, after an absence of several years, you do not expect your visitor to knock on the door, settle down in the living room, and then throw something in your face.
