Colonialism and the History of Archaeology in the Spanish Caribbean

Comparative Archaeologies

Abstract

Since the early European incursions in the New World, the Caribbean has been a region of colonial establishment and contestation. In one way or another, colonialism in its different forms, has influenced, shaped, or affected almost every aspect of life, including the academic world. This paper discusses the histories of the development of current archaeologies in Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Dominican Republic. Particularly, the paper emphasizes the legacy of North American and European archaeologists who were instrumental in the adoption and long survival of a positivist and normative paradigm that have stagnated the advancement of theoretical thoughts and curbed the development of true local archaeologies in the region.
