Abstract
A look back at the twentieth century reveals that education provided the momentum for economic growth and social development in both developing and developed countries. The twenty-first century is likely to be dominated by the knowledgebased economy, and the most important sources of economic growth will turn out to be the production, processing, dissemination, and application of knowledge. Therefore, education will play a prominent and basic role both in knowledge creation and dissemination, and human resource development.
