Abstract

Postpartum hemorrhage, if severe, can be a major obstetrical emergency, which, if not treated promptly, may result in rapid exsanguination and demise of the mother. Specimens submitted to the pathology laboratory depend on the clinical situation and may include the placenta, retroplacental curettings, other sampling from the endometrial cavity, the uterus, or, in some cases, no specimen at all.
