Attentional Dysfunction Associated with Psychiatric Illness

  • Chapter
The Neuropsychology of Attention

Part of the book series: Critical Issues in Neuropsychology ((CINP))

Abstract

In this chapter, we consider attentional disturbances that are commonly observed in patients presenting with four psychiatric conditions: (1) affective disorders; (2) schizophrenia; (3) attention-deficit—hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); and (4) anxiety/stress disorders. For each of these disorders, we review the characteristics of the attentional disturbance and the brain mechanisms that have been proposed to account for this attentional problem.
