Abstract
WHEN a real-world software engineer talks about system design with components, it may mean following a quite formal process, or it may mean no more than a vague plan to divide the software into parts. Between these extremes, commercial software tools are available to support practical CBSD. Commercial component tools are practical aids to software development; they have no theoretical basis. They are also unlike the SYN tools of this monograph in that the components to which they apply are not restricted as SYN’s are. Within their narrow scope, the SYN tools are much more capable.
