Abstract
Yawning is an arousal reflex thought to be generated in the brainstem reticular formation to counteract brain hypoxia; it may precede vasovagal syncope. Excessive or pathological yawning (chasm) is compulsive, repetitive yawning not triggered by physiological stimuli such as fatigue or boredom.
