A Fatal Chariot Ride

Abstract

Auriga is one of the oldest constellations, being known in ancient Mesopotamia as a charioteer at least as early as 2000 bc and probably much earlier. Even then, Auriga was depicted as holding a goat or goats, much as it is shown today. Because of its extreme age, the stories told about Auriga have incorporated the myths and legends of several cultures, with each one modifying the earlier stories to correspond to some local person or diety.
