Abstract
This chapter on bilirubin and its effects on energy metabolism will examine many studies, both in liver and brain relating to significant mitochondrial alterations induced by bilirubin. These studies were conducted by early investigators, and confirmed by later workers. Changes in a multitude of other neurochemical metabolites and compounds have been described, and are the subject of the next chapter. Many of these changes may be secondary to primary alterations in energy metabolism. The following represent some of the key investigations regarding liver and brain energy metabolism changes in hyperbilirubinemia.
