Presented in this chapter is the mathematics on which an introductory account of the simplex method rests. This consists principally of:

A method for solving systems of linear equations that is known as Gauss-Jordan elimination.

A discussion of vector spaces and their bases.

An introduction to terminology that is used throughout this book.
