The derivative of a function of one variable is familiar from college-level calculus. The derivative of a function of several variables plays an important role in nonlinear programming. Most college-level calculus books employ a particular definition of the derivative. This definition works for functions of one variable. It fails for functions of two or more variables. In this chapter, the standard definition is reviewed. Then a variant that generalizes is introduced. Its properties are explored.
