Abstract

What is the most beautiful object in the sky? Many people will favour a spiral galaxy, such as the Whirlpool; others will opt for a lunar crater, or a great comet with a glowing head and long, gently-curved tail – but my vote goes unhesitatingly to Saturn, the planet with the rings. There are plenty of spirals, many lunar craters and the occasional spectacular comet, but there is only one Saturn.
