Abstract

This chapter and the next chapter deal with some of the important economic issues in relation to a welfare-oriented society. These are income and asset distribution, the relative share of income, household structure, and pension. We examine the first two issues in this chapter. Among others, income and asset distribution is an important economic issue that has been under heated discussion in both the academic and political worlds of Japan, in particular in the 2000s.
