Essentials of Anatomic Pathology

Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to provide a practical, concise review of transplantation pathology. A brief review of transplantation immunology is given to put some of the aspects of clinical transplantation care into perspective. Complications of transplantation common to all organs are also addressed. All the criteria for diagnosis are highlighted in boxed tables for easy reference with illustrations for most. The criteria for cardiac rejection have been recently revised. A table is provided to correlate the old grading system with the new one. Grading systems for liver, lung, small bowel, and graft vs. host disease (GVHD) are largely unchanged since the previous edition. New grading systems for pancreas and skin-containing allografts (i.e., limb and face) are also included.
