Dietary Effects on Cardiovascular Risk Factors
Diseases of the cardiovascular system remain the leading cause of death in developed countries and, as recently noted by the World Health Organization , in developing countries. As the disease burden shifts from communicable to noncommunicable diseases, diseases of the cardiovascular system have emerged as a major public health problem. In the United States, the two major contributors to the actual cause of cardiovascular death have been identified as diet imbalance/physical inactivity and tobacco use (See Fig. 1) .
