Abstract
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is by far the most common arrhythmia in clinical practice, affecting approximately 2.2 million Americans, with an incidence rate of 160,000 new cases per year (Lloyd-Jones et al., 2009). It is estimated that by the year 2050, AF will affect 5.6 million Americans. The cost of managing AF and its associated complications in Medicare patients has been estimated to be $15.7 billion per year (Lee et al., 2008).
