Abstract

Diarrhea is common in the older adult population. Age-related factors and polypharmacy in the geriatric age group increase the susceptibility of this population to diarrheal diseases. Due to its covert presentation, diarrhea may be overlooked or inadequately treated in the geriatric population, placing these patients at risk for complications with associated increase in morbidity and mortality. Early resuscitation and prompt diagnosis with appropriate treatment are therefore of prime importance. This chapter discusses etiology, clinical presentation, and management of diarrhea in the elderly.
