Abstract
Encapsulated, benign neoplasm composed of neuroendocrine cells arranged in a lobular fashion arising from the autonomic ganglia (paraganglia) of the sympathetic and parasympathetic chains. The parasympathetic variety tends to arise predominantly in the head and neck region often along the jugular veins and carotid arteries, with direct extension into the cranial vault. Sympathetic paragangliomas are typically retroperitoneal. Best characterized paragangliomas of the central nervous system (CNS) are those of the filum terminale (WHO grade I).
