Abstract
Protozoa are prevalent pathogens in tropical and subtropical countries, although they also cause some of the most common intestinal infections in North America. Immigration, increasing numbers of immunocompromised patients, use of institutional child-care facilities, and the development of improved diagnostic techniques for stool collection, handling, and examination have enhanced our understanding and recognition of protozoa. A summary of protozoa affecting the gastrointestinal tract is given in Table, and selected protozoan infections are discussed below and in subsequent chapters.
