In the gastrointestinal tract, human papillomaviruses (HPV) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of esophageal papilloma, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, anal condyloma and anal squamous intraepithelial lesions, and anal squamous cell carcinoma. Differences in reported rates of HPV positivity in these lesions may reflect differences in the investigative techniques used, as well as differences in the patient populations studied.
