Abstract
Like every other morning, Dave Foster poured himself a cup of coffee, walked to his study, turned on his computer, and started a new work day. Dave owns a home-based business which requires him to spend most of his work day in front of a computer.
Dave always begins each morning by checking his email. There were several emails waiting in the inbox on this particular morning. One of the emails immediately grabbed his attention. It was sent from the VUMC Patient Portal. He anxiously opened it. The email had only one paragraph: You have a new lab result. Please log in to Patient Portal to view the detail.
Dave had not been feeling very well recently. He had been experiencing inexplicable fatigue. The previous week, he went to see Dr. Fox, his primary physician. Dr. Fox ordered a radiology study and told him that the results should be available in a couple of days.
